About Mumming
Mumming is the feeling one experiences when encountering something unexpected along a country lane, the inner dialogue that arises at that moment—this is mumming. To step into an unfamiliar countryside and explore for the first time—this too, is mumming.
There is Moving Center mumming, where two people engage in spontaneous movement, one action responding to another in an unspoken rhythm.
There is Emotional Center mumming, which always manifests as a cry, a petition, or a longing. Jewish and Christian chants, the gestures of Islamic devotion—these are mumming, expressions of the deep emotions that stir within.
Moving Center mumming carries less consciousness than emotional mumming. At an even more instinctive level, there is Instinctive Center mumming, which occurs without consciousness at all. There is no such thing as Thinking Center mumming. The three—moving, emotional, and instinctive—are all, in some way, rooted in the primal forces of sexual exchange.
Certain forces can arise in a particular place, either due to the land itself or the people who inhabit it. These forces can stir mumming within you, compelling you to express them.
Thus far, mumming has been a fiesta of self-ecstasy—a means of self-expression, even a safe form of self-punishment. Beyond this, there are those who seek to invent, and the line between invention, imagination, and reality is razor-thin.
Mumming can be collective or individual. A skilled mummer can perform alone for hours, lost in the flow, with no recollection of what transpired.
Mumming Through Time
One can mum to history, to the present, or even to oneself.
One usually mums not to what is within, but to what is absent. There is also a form of mumming that arises from thoughts left unexpressed—when something has been contemplated but never acted upon, it can find release through mumming.
There are three levels of mumming:
Invention—fully conscious.
Response—semi-conscious.
Intuitive—unconscious in its arising.
Intention in Mumming
The potential of mumming is determined by the degree of intention. If one approaches it frivolously, the experience will be hollow and quickly turn sour. Intention is of paramount importance.
Mumming, in a sense, is akin to astral travel—one must set a date, dedicate the necessary energy, and prepare. Precision in preparation leads to precision in outcome. Intention is the key. Mmming is serious business, and it will be treated as such.
If I see someone drawn toward a role that may be harmful to them at that moment, I will shield them from it. We must navigate this practice with care. First, we must build a vessel that floats; only then can we refine it.
If I ask you to sit during the mumming, do not take offense—I do so with purpose. My role is to seal, balance, and create, and this depends on your intention and state of mind.
The Journey Ahead
Why have you come to mumming? Is it to seek a strange and novel experience? Perhaps. But you must decide if this path is truly for you—and, more importantly, what your intention is.
A vast richness awaits. Mumming encompasses everything: sound, posture, movement, force, attraction, power, secrecy, and more.
One must be free and uninhibited. What holds you back from fully surrendering to the part of you that seeks expression? Prepare yourself. Become fertile ground for the experience. What a gift, to be uninhibited!
Practice freeing yourself—allowing spontaneous outbursts, making yourself prone to mumming. Will you express yourself without hesitation? Will you feel the drama inherent in all things? Do not wait for the moment to arise, and do not force invention. Simply say to yourself, "I am prepared."
The Edge of Madness and Imagination
Imagination is the soul's eye—but it is also the instrument of madness. The boundary between the two is perilously thin.
Mumming is about plasticity—your body may hunch, your face may transform, and your posture may warp. This is natural.
I wonder: Can I encourage you to give voice to the hidden parts of yourself—those that never see the light of day?
Have you ever, when alone, attempted to sing in a way completely foreign to you? Have you ever felt the pounding in your chest, the tightness in your throat, just before committing an act of transgression? What is Drake's Drum? Do you know the story? What was its beating? What is the tremor in a schoolboy's heart before his first theft?
A Threshold Awaits
You must be free. This is a serious undertaking—there is no place for idle play.
Thus, I have brought you a crystal of great power, so that forces of an unusual and extraordinary nature may break through.
I bring you a bell—at its sound, you will begin and end immediately.
you must learn to feel the noise and to feel the silence.
Do you understand that Julius Caesar was assassinated out of shame for his blindness? Or that Alexander the Great awaited the seizure that would claim his life?
You stand at the threshold of mumming.
See to your intention.
That is all.
